1981 - 2006: celebrating 25 years

On 19th May, Archbishop Desmond Tutu hosted the Trust's 25th anniversary celebrations at King's College London. Archbishop Tutu stated:

"I would like to congratulate Canon Collins Trust on its 25th anniversary. Higher education is essential to reduce poverty, ensure sustainable development and contribute to the building of peace. Twenty-five years after it was set up, the work of the Trust is still much needed because it enables southern Africans themselves to transform lives."

The event was attended by some 290 individuals who have been involved with the Trust over the past 25 years. Those supporters who were able to attend our celebration on 19th May remarked on the extremely lively and entertaining contribution made by Archbishop Tutu. He also extended the following message to the Trust's loyal supporters:

"You are investing in an exhilarating enterprise which is making a tangible, measurable difference by giving people hope."

Therese Gondwe, a Canon Collins Scholar from Malawi who is researching food security, echoed the Archbishop's optimism in her speech at the event:

"I am telling you, the supporters of Canon Collins Trust, that the problems in Africa will end. Don't give up. By giving to the Trust, you are ensuring that we are able to make progress in Africa."

These words show the determination that exists among young people in southern Africa to improve lives in their communities.

“We don’t have a community eye health training course in Zambia and it’s expensive to train abroad, so scholarships like Canon Collins Trust’s are invaluable to our country. I wouldn’t have been able to study if it wasn’t for the scholarship.”
