UK Scholarships

Please note that the application period is open from the 1st of September 2008, closing December 2008 for study in 2009.

Canon Collins Trust awards approximately 60-90 postgraduate scholarships to the UK for southern African students each year. Scholarships fall under several different schemes, with some administered in partnership with the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office and UK universities.

Canon Collins Trust received 680 applications for the 2007/08 academic year. Of these applications, 33% were from Zimbabwe and 27% were from Malawi. 33 applicants successfully gained a scholarship. Of the successful applicants, 12 were from Zambia, 9 were from Zimbabwe, 6 were from Malawi, 3 were from South Africa, whilst there was one successful applicant from Namibia, Mozambique and Botswana. In terms of gender balance, 19 of these were men and 14 were women. A variety of subjects will be studied ranging from health, education, governance, gender, agriculture, mining, communications to fine arts.

All scholarships are for postgraduate study for one academic year. Full scholarships, including maintenance and tuition fees, or partial grants are provided for taught/research Masters programmes.

All applicants must be committed to:

  • Returning to southern Africa upon completion of their studies
  • Using the knowledge, training and skills acquired in the UK for the general benefit of their home community and country

Applications for all subject areas will be considered however scholarships for academic programmes which are relevant to the needs of southern Africa will be prioritised. Students are expected to apply independently to British universities.

Application Process: In most cases initial assessment for scholarships are made on the basis of a completed Canon Collins Trust application form.  Applications for the Graça Machel Scholarship Programmeare also eligible for the other programmes.

All the documentation requested, including references and transcripts, must be sent with the form. Where possible, interviews will be conducted.

Selection Process: UK scholarship applications are assessed by a scholarships selection committee comprised of the Chief Executive, the Scholarships Programme Manager, trustees and academics. Academic achievement, work experience, motivation, relevance of the course to southern Africa's needs, and commitment to community and country are all factors in selection.

Double funding (i.e. receipt of full scholarships from both Canon Collins Trust and another organisation) is not allowed and will result in withdrawal of the award.

Southern Africa is facing epidemic after epidemic and you need specialists to deal with these issues. Canon Collins Trust might not realise what difference they are making in our lives in southern Africa, but they will certainly go down in my history as an institution that helped me realise my dreams.
