Canon Collins Trust awards approximately 20-30 postgraduate scholarships to the UK for southern African students each year. Scholarships fall under several different schemes, with some administered in partnership with the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office and UK universities.
Canon Collins Trust received 450 applications for the 2008/09 academic year. Of the successful applicants: 6 were from Malawi, 4 from Zambia, 3 from Zimbabwe, 3 from Botswana, 2 from Lesotho, 2 from Mozambique, and one was from Namibia. In terms of gender balance, 11 were women and 10 were men. A variety of subjects will be studied ranging from drug discovery skills, radio systems engineering, law, biodiversity and conservation, structural engineering and development.
All scholarships are for postgraduate study for one academic year. Full scholarships, including maintenance and tuition fees, or partial grants are provided for taught/research Masters programmes.
All applicants must be committed to:
- Returning to southern Africa upon completion of their studies
- Using the knowledge, training and skills acquired in the UK for the general benefit of their home community and country
Applications for all subject areas will be considered however scholarships for academic programmes which are relevant to the needs of southern Africa will be prioritised. Students are expected to apply independently to British universities.
Application Process: All scholarships are made on the basis of a completed Canon Collins Trust application form.
Selection Process: UK scholarship applications are assessed by a scholarships selection committee comprised of the Chief Executive, the Scholarships Programme Manager, trustees and academics. Academic achievement, work experience, motivation, relevance of the course to southern Africa's needs, and commitment to community and country are all factors in selection.
Double funding (i.e. receipt of full scholarships from both Canon Collins Trust and another organisation) is not allowed and will result in withdrawal of the award.
