Programme for Technological Careers - PROTEC
PROTEC is an indipendent non-profit organisation that helps high school children from economically disadvantaged black communities in South Africa to improve their school results in science, engineering and technology. It was founded in 1982 in Soweto to help young school leavers from disadvantaged communities to prepare for and successfully embark on careers in science and technology.
Since then PROTEC has expanded into a nation-wide programme and is now working with seven provincial education departments to introduce technology as a formal school subject. It is currently providing materials, teacher-training and school-based quality teaching for science, maths, technology and World-of-Work education for more than 160,000 students, from Grade 5 to Grade 12 in over 700 schools throughout South Africa. In addition, PROTEC provides training and support to over 3,500 school managers and teachers.
The Canon Collins Trust supports the Girls Education & Training in Science, Engineering & Technology (GET SET) programme which aims to improve the gender balance in the technical economy. The project provides science, technology, maths and career education for girls in Grades 10 to 12.
