The Giyani Science Centre in South Africa offers children and young people from 107 local schools the chance to walk into an environment they had only dreamed about. “Ninety-nine per cent of the students who come here are touching a computer for the first time,” says M. J. Chauke, former Canon Collins Scholar and now co-ordinator of primary sciences at Giyani. “You can imagine the enthusiasm and encouragement students get from the experience. When they enter the room you can see their eyes turn to saucers.”
