The Giyani Science Centre

Situated in the Limpopo Province, one of South Africa's most deprived areas, the Giyani Science Centre aims to improve understanding of maths, science and ICT by offering its computer and lab facilities to both young and old members of the local community. Giyani is driven by a determination to offer levels of science education only dreamed of under apartheid; the sign outside the Centre challenges all who enter:

"Prepare to be changed if you pass this sign."

In recent years the Giyani Science Centre and Canon Collins Trust have been working on an ambitious and innovative project which has put computer labs in additional schools across the local area. This particular project has reached over 7,000 pupils in the last 2 years alone and 4,000 of these children are now accessing ICT facilities at their schools for the very first time.

The Centre is bringing a new world of science and technology into the lives of over 11,000 children. The children are able to access quality education resources at the computer labs in their own communities. The computers have become a genuine reference point for pupils who use the computers for a wide range of subjects. Over 550 teachers have received specialist ICT training so that they can effectively teach children to use software such as Learnthings whose science programmes teach children about scientific programmes from chemical reactions to plant reproduction in an exciting and accessible way.
